Audio: Director Andrew Wiest on "Dead Noon"

Dead Noon is a self-proclaimed zombie Western released on DVD across the U.S. on Feb. 3. Much of its gore-splattered action takes place in and around the Cody area.

On Tuesday, we did a story on the project, but not all the good stories made it into the article. In this audio clip, film director Andrew Wiest, formerly of Cody, explains where the Lionsgate version of Dead Noon went wrong (in his opinion), and talks about what it was like working with B-movie star, Kane Hodder.

Lionsgate's trailer for Dead Noon is embedded below. Please note that it's rated R, for campy violence.

"Tomorrow's Tribune"

A preview of the stories you'll find in tomorrow's Tribune, as told by quotes that didn't fit in the paper.

"Everybody loves walking skeletons. That was our number one selling point," director Andy Wiest, hyping his zombie Western, "Dead Noon." A good portion of the flick was shot in and around Cody. Read about the production tomorrow, and track this blog for some audio content.

"Our customers did nothing wrong, the merchants did nothing wrong, the bank did nothing wrong,"
Big Horn Federal President John King, talking about how a security breach at a New Jersey company is causing headaches for area banks and customers. Despite the fact that the breach was no fault of any local folks or institutions, hundreds of credit cards have been re-issued by area banks. Learn some details tomorrow.

"It's been so dang close a couple times,"
PHS girls basketball coach Luke Danforth, explaining the added joy in beating Jackson for the first time in three season. A full recap of Friday night's 35-34 thriller follows in Tuesday's sports section.

Calling all local photographers

On a Tuesday morning last month, Powell awoke to a bitterly cold January day that was made much brighter by sundogs. In addition to being dazzled by the early morning beauty, the Tribune staff also was happy to receive readers’ photos of the sundogs. Folks around the community captured lovely images and, to our delight, shared them with us. In turn, we were able to share them with the community in the Thursday, Jan. 29 edition.

We love seeing the world through local photographers’ lenses. While unusual weather spurred the recent outpouring of photo submissions, we enjoy receiving pictures whenever you have something noteworthy to share. So please keep the images coming. And don’t worry — we’ll be sure to give you attribution.

To further inspire local photo enthusiasts, I’d like to invite you to participate in our weekly photo themes. We recently began assigning a photo theme to help generate creative snapshots of everyday life in our community. Since last month, Tribune staffers have roamed around the town, camera in hand and theme in mind.

This week’s theme is “texture.” We try to make themes broad enough that the photographer has plenty of room for creativity.

Previous January themes included: Motion, weather, the color red, and shapes or patterns. Please feel free to contribute to any of these categories. Themes don’t expire.

So if you’re a photographer — trained, amateur, rusty or green — I invite you to participate in the Tribune’s weekly photo themes. We’ll post them on the blog each week so you’re in the loop. I can’t promise that all photos will end up in the paper, but they may end up on the blog or in an online photo gallery (coming soon…)

When you have an image to contribute, please e-mail it to: web@powelltribune.com.

Happy shooting!

Pretty in Pink

The Powell High School Lady Panthers basketball teamJustin Hobbs (center) poses with the PHS Lady Panthers following their Jan. 30 win over Worland. He's holding an autographed basketball raffled off in a half-time drawing.

The drawing, like the pink unis the Lady Panthers substituted for their usual orange and black, were all part of Hoops for Hope, a drive the Powell and Worland teams have joined to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. The evening’s activities included an auction, and, along with activities conducted by the PHS student body during the week, raised approximately $20,000 for the Women’s Wellness Center.

Coincidentally, Justin’s mom, Mandy Hobbs (left) was the coordinator of the event.

The Lady Panthers are, from left, Randi Asay, Kami Cooley, Kelsey Allen, Lauren Fagnant, Darcee Lynn, McKenzie Danforth, Savannah Donarski, Hannah Pollart, Leslie Thronburg, Katie Kipp and Olivia Rogers.

The campaign will be repeated in Worland when the Panthers and Lady Panthers travel to Worland for rematches with the Warriors and Lady Warriors.

Slideshow: Kids' Day Cheerleading

Area children lifted the spirits of Panther fans during a half-time show at Saturday night's PHS boys basketball game. However, the young cheerleaders' day started much earlier.

Practice started at 9 a.m. at the high school. The kids learned four cheers and one dance from the Powell High School cheerleaders and Groove Masters.

Here is a slideshow of the kids' cheer-leading preparations.
