The obvious question is, why?
Right after the Park County Republicans opened their campaign office, Chairman David Northrup said he'd seen a huge demand for McCain-Palin yard signs. He said the party was working to get their hands on some.
Some folks are eager enough they're not waiting on official swag. A Powell resident apparently constructed the below-pictured sign by hand to voice their support of the Palin-McCain ticket.

Last week, after the County Republican's office was vandalized, GOP member Terry Hinkle said that McCain signs are being stolen almost as soon as they're in the ground. But Park County Democratic Chairwoman Margaret Whited said the Dem's have had similar trouble with pilfered Obama signs.
No one has any hard numbers, and a big reason why is that no one had been reporting the thefts.
Before the Tribune and Enterprise ran stories last week about the vandalism, there had been zero reports of swiped political signs to Powell or Cody police. In the days since those stories were published, reports have started trickling in.
Sounds like some troublemakers could stand to get a new hobby. I mean, what do you do with signs you don't want, anyway?
UPDATE: An Obama supporter decided to make a homemade sign of his own. Very cool.
I find it hard to believe that the stealing of either signs is that epidemic... I haven't seen any McCain-Palin signs either (not even up for one day), I just thought it was because the Republican party knows that Wyoming is a slam dunk and they are not going to throw money to a state that is a given—no matter how many Obama signs are out there. And as we all know, McCain is on a pretty tight budget.
ReplyDeleteI wish there were firm numbers. I remember in high school that some of my pals bragged about stealing like, 40 signs and dumping them on another student's lawn. Of course, they got caught.
ReplyDeleteI had heard 100 signs were on the way to Park County. With the fundraising cap, I wonder what McCain does with the money raised from yard sign sales...
On the flip side, here in NY there are few Obama signs either. There are 4 McCain signs on my one block street but no Obama signs. The fact is I don't know where I would get one. But then what good does it do in a one block street.

Somebody seriously needs to do a scientific study on who puts up signs and how they affect/predict election results, cause I don't see McCain winning New York or Obama winning Wyoming.
ReplyDeleteHere in the suburbs of Seattle, there are multiple signs all up and down my street for both tickets. I always chuckle when I walk past the house with signs from both parties prominently displayed on the front lawn. Me thinks Bedfellows make strange politics.
